Waltercio Caldas

Waltercio Caldas Júnior (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 1946). Sculptor, designer, graphic artist, set designer. Studied painting with Ivan Serpa (1923-1973) at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) in 1964. Between 1969 and 1975, he produced conceptual drawings, objects and photographs. In the 1970s, he lectured at Instituto Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janeiro; co-edited the magazine Malasartes; was a member of the Cultural Planning Commission of MAM/RJ; participated in the publication A Parte do Fogo and published, with Carlos Zilio (1944), Ronaldo Brito (1949) and José Resende (1945), the article O Boom, o Pós-Boom, o Dis-Boom, in the Opinião newspaper. In 1979, his production was analyzed in the book Aparelhos, with an essay by Ronaldo Brito, and, in 1982, in Manual da Ciência Popular, published by Funarte in the series Arte Brasileira Contemporânea. In 1986, the video Apaga-te Sésamo, by Miguel Rio Branco (1946), focused on his production. In 1993, he received the Mário Pedrosa Award from Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Arte (ABCA) for a solo show at Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (MNBA) in Rio de Janeiro. In 1996, he launched the artwork O Livro Velázquez and held the solo show Anotações 1969/1996, at Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, presenting his study notebooks for the first time.
