Jorge Guinle

Jorge Guinle Filho (New York, USA, 1947 - idem, 1987). Painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Moves with his family to Brazil still in the year of his birth and stays in Rio de Janeiro until 1955. From this year until 1962, with his mother, he lived in Paris and then in New York, where he remained until 1965. In France, in parallel with his regular education, he began, as an autodidact, to study painting and frequented museums and art galleries, a practice he continued when he moved to the United States. The contact with works by both masters of painting and contemporary artists are remarkable in his development. He is particularly influenced by the works of French painter Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) and by American action painting and pop art. From 1965 to 1974 he lived in Rio de Janeiro and spent some time in London and Paris, where he returned to in the latter year and settled for another three years. In 1977 he returns to live in Rio de Janeiro. His work gains repercussion and, in the 1980s, is included in the country's main art exhibitions. The artist's production, concentrated in the last seven years of his life, is mostly dedicated to painting, which draws attention for its vigor and intricate reference to modern and contemporary art movements. Jorge Guinle is an important promoter of the revaluation of painting promoted by the group of young artists known as the Geração 80. He took part in the show Como Vai Você, Geração 80?, at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage - EAV/Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, 1984, wrote a text for the special issue of Módulo magazine dedicated to this show, took part in various exhibitions and events organized by these artists and wrote about their work.
