Flávio Cerqueira

Flávio dos Santos Cerqueira (São Paulo, SP, 1983). Sculptor. Graduated in Fine Arts at the Faculdade Paulista de Artes (FPA) in 2005. He works with the traditional process of bronze sculpture. In figurative works, proposes narratives that interact with the viewer, such as Antes que eu me esqueça (2011) and Amnésia (2015), being recurrent the approach of racial issues.

 

Participates, in 2011, in the 16th edition of the Bienal de Cerveira, Portugal. In 2015, he exhibits in the group shows Icharida Chode Brazilian Contemporary Art at Plaza North Gallery in Saitama, Japan, and Resignifications at Stefano Bardini Museum in Florence, Italy. In the same year, he participates in the 10th Bienal do Mercosul. He has held several solo exhibitions, among them, Eu Vi o Mundo e Ele Começa Dentro de Mim (2015) at Paço das Artes in São Paulo, and Se Precisar, Conto Outra Vez (2016) at Galeria Casa Triângulo in São Paulo.

 

In 2017, he exhibits in the group show South/South Let me Begin Again at the Goodman Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa. In the same year, he begins his master's degree at the Institute of Arts at the Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (IA/Unesp). In 2018, Cerqueira does an artist residency at the Kansas City Art Institute, with the goal of developing an unpublished sculpture for the group exhibition Open Spaces, which takes place at Swope Park in Kansas City, United States, as well as Resignifications: The Black Mediterranean at Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in the city of Palermo, Italy, and Histórias Afro-Atlânticas at Museu de Arte de São Paulo (Masp).

 

His works are part of the collections of Brazilian museums such as Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (Pina_), Museu Afro Brasil, Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (MAC/USP) and Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul (MARGS).
